Google Got it Right
I’m going to come right out and say that I’m not a very disciplined person. I definitely greet the world through more of a feeling-emotion lens than a linear, task-oriented one. This, like most personality traits, is a blessing and a curse. Having a high degree of empathy and emotional awareness makes me (if I say so myself) an exceptional coach, but there are many times in life when I could have climbed this or that ladder more quickly if I’d had a bigger dose of personal discipline. On the other hand, I have ambition, a strong inner drive for growth and a pretty big vision for what I want out of life.
A recipe for inner conflict? You bet! This shows up in bursts of impressive momentum followed by long periods of plateau. I used to beat myself up about this but now I find ways to work with my personality, instead of against it.
Google Got It Right
In fact, this isn’t a unique struggle at all! Huge and hugely successful corporations have poured significant resources into developing environments that stimulate the creativity of their employees. For a really entertaining way to learn more about this, watch the movie The Internship, which has Vince Vaughan and Owen Wilson vying for coveted spots at Google. Google’s headquarters looks like a giant playground and they seem to be doing well as a company!
Stimulate Your Creative Soul
If I’m stuck, I can coax more productivity – and creativity – out of myself if I:
- Use construction paper, sticky notes and colourful markers to liven up dull but required tasks
- Reward myself for accomplishing something hard by watching an episode of a favourite show
- Shake up my energy by dancing like a maniac around the living room
- Read inspirational quotes
- Call a friend who makes me laugh
What do you do when you’re stuck? When you are resisting a necessary task? What would you do differently if you celebrated the parts of your personality that you often judge yourself for? How much energy and passion would that free up?
